The Portfolio Paradox: Why We Fall for Templates and Cookie-Cutter Designs : An Ode to Every Designer’s Eternal Struggle
By Sneha, Charan and Ulhas
Ever stare at your portfolio and think, "Wow, this is just... meh?" Like it's nothing more than a vanilla-flavored catalog of designs? If so, welcome to the club. We've all been there, especially when you’ve spent countless hours perfecting a showcase that, at the end of the day, feels like every other portfolio out there.
Our COO, let’s call him the "Chief of Overlooked Originals," once shared his portfolio horror stories with us. He’d received what seemed like an avalanche of identical submissions—like they were mass-produced by a robot with a fetish for minimalism and grids. We started calling it the "Pinterestification of Portfolios."
Naturally, we had to investigate. So, we went straight to the source: design students. And the conversations we had? Let’s just say, they were eye-opening, face-palm-inducing, and sometimes downright tragic. The students were battling portfolio paralysis, often opting for quick fixes like templates—those one-size-fits-all band-aids. The result? Portfolios that screamed "I’m here to fit in!" rather than, "I’m here to stand out!"
But why? Why are so many creative souls falling into this portfolio pitfall?
The Pressure to Impress: A.k.a. "Please Like Me" Syndrome
First up, the classic culprit: fear. Ah yes, the pressure to make the perfect first impression—where students feel they have to pull out all the stops and show a gazillion projects, whether they love them or not. It's like speed dating in portfolio form. Instead of showcasing real talent, it's all about quantity over quality. When you're too focused on throwing everything and the kitchen sink in there, the unique you gets buried under the clutter of "look-how-much-I-can-do."
The Allure of Templates: Because Blank Canvases Are Scary
We get it. Staring at a blank screen can feel like staring into the abyss. Enter: templates, the comforting cocoon for the creatively insecure. They're like that IKEA manual you think you need until you realize it’s just leading you to build the same bland bookshelf as everyone else. Sure, templates give you structure and a quick win, but guess what? They also make your portfolio look like everyone else's—a design déjà vu that no one asked for.
The Lack of Guidance: Flying Blind
Here’s where it gets rough—many students are navigating the portfolio labyrinth with nothing but a "good luck!" and a pat on the back. Without the luxury of seasoned mentors or feedback from professionals, it’s no wonder they turn to what feels "safe." So, what happens? They play by the rules. No risks, no edge, no personality—just a whole lot of generic portfolios that play it way too safe.
So, What’s the Real Conclusion Here?
Now, here’s where things get real: there is no magical formula. No definitive right or wrong way to build the perfect portfolio. In fact, we’re as lost as you are. Seriously, we don’t have the answer—and that’s okay.
You might be searching for some grand, all-encompassing portfolio wisdom, but the truth is, there’s no perfect solution because there's no perfect portfolio. It all depends on what feels authentic to you.
In the end, it’s not about crafting a portfolio that checks all the right boxes or follows some unwritten industry rulebook. The real key? When your portfolio is an honest reflection of your creative voice, that’s when it stands out. So, no, we won’t give you a neat conclusion or tell you “this is the way.” Because there is no one way.
